Nick’s Outdoor Session

Nick Pennington poses for an outdoor session in the woods near Lefferts Pond in Chittenden, VT, on the afternoon of 29 December 2011.

Nick is a freshman Wildlife Management major. He’s also an avid rock climber, a competition archer, and an all-around nature lover who is definitely at home in the outdoors. He can start a fire and setup a tent and, I think, knows something about hatchet throwing. Without a doubt the sort of guy you want along on your next camping trip. He’s also my brother, which is probably the only reason that he agreed to don his coonskin cap, grab his bow, and trek out into the woods for a portrait shoot.

Gianna – Christmas Photos

Christmas photos of Gianna taken at Fell Charter School on the evening of 02 December 2011.

This is Gianna, one of the cutest gals I’ve had the pleasure of working with, and certainly a far cry younger than the high school seniors I’ve been working with!  Her mom wanted photos for the annual Christmas card, so we got together at the local playground and did the a series outdoors.  It took little Gianna a few minutes to warm up to the camera, but after that, she was magic.

Lauren – Senior Session

Senior session for Lauren Boyle at the Boyle Ranch on the morning of 06 November 2011.The day after finishing Kristen’s senior session, I was able to shoot part two with Lauren.  Time was tight and we ended up having a few last shots to finish up at a later date, but what we were able to accomplish was just excellent!  Lauren hammed it up for the camera as usual and really rocked the country vibe – since we were shooting on her grandparent’s ranch, it was easy to pull it all together and come away with some great stuff.

Kristen – Senior Session

Kristen is an artist and an equestrian, the quiet one in the family who every now and then cuts loose with a real zinger.  When she asked about senior portraits, I was psyched, and immediately thought of having her a field in her prom dress near sunset.  It’s the perfect look for her, and she rocked it for the camera.

Lauren – Senior Session

High school senior Lauren on the shore of Lake Jean at Ricketts Glen State Park on the evening of 24 August 2011.

Lauren, who worked with me on some cheerleading photos on a very cold and windy day last spring, is back in front of the camera, this time for her senior portraits! This is part one of a two for Lauren, and we started by hitting up one of the nearby parks for some shots near the waterfalls, before moving up to the lakeside to finish.

Jesse & Allison: 09-10-11

Jesse and Allison Narkewicz's wedding reception, held at the Bellinger Estate near Storrs, CT, on the afternoon of 10 September 2011.

Jesse has been my best friend since Kindergarten. We grew up together, learned to drive together, got ready for Proms together, and although we eventually went to college in different states, we’ve remained close in the years since leaving home. Now Jess has made the big leap and gotten married to Allison, who is simply wonderful and compliments him perfectly.

His wedding was a dual honor for me – not only was I able to serve as a groomsman and hand him the rings while he made his vows, but I was able to photograph the reception afterwards for him. (I offered to cover the whole wedding, but we decided that it would be difficult for me to be at the alter with him, and taking photos at the same time!)

Summer Shoot with Sara

Met up with Sara again a few weeks back to do a shoot that was more in line with what we had hoped for the first time around, when a sudden cold snap made us change plans and go with a deep winter look. This time we were lucky and the weather worked with us, sunshine and warm temps well into the evening!

Sara models for a Spring photo shoot at McDade Park in Scranton, PA, on the afternoon of 05 May 2011.

Sara is a real joy to work with, full of energy and enthusiasm (not to mention a bit of impishness). While we had a few ideas in mind, such as the bubble shot above, we were mostly taking opportunities as they came, working with the light and the setting as it changed. The last few hours of daylight are the most dynamic from a photography perspective, and it can be difficult to keep up, conditions changing minute by minute. But it’s hands-down the best time to be making portraits.

Memorial Day 2011

Now that the holiday mayhem has died down, I wanted to share some images from Monday.  You might be wondering how there can be much turmoil on Memorial Day – after all, it isn’t a holiday that’s generally known for anything more exciting than some spicy ribs and, maybe, a fireworks show.

And really that’s how it all started – the annual bar-b-que at a friend’s house, burgers on the grill, lounge chairs on the lawn, and ice cream for dessert.  It sounds like the perfect way to spend a sunny, summer afternoon.  And it was.  So where’s the mayhem?

Sara – Test Shoot

The blog has been suffering lately – really since the website redesign back in February.  I apologize for that.  I’ve been actively looking into some long-term opportunities these past few weeks, which has taken up a lot of my time.  Time when I would rather have been out making photos.  But then, when wouldn’t I rather be doing that?
So we’re going to step back a couple of weeks to a test shoot I did with Sara.  You know, back when there was still snow on the ground.  Which hadn’t been what we were planning on, but winter had once last blast to throw at us, so we ran with it.
