Kimmy’s Senior Portraits

BRENT PENNINGTON Kimmy Pretko's senior portrait shoot, held at her home in Dallas, PA, and the nearby Lands at Hillside Farm on the afternoon of 24 October 2015.

A flashback to autumn, when it was still warm before the snow began flying.  I met up with Kimmy down in the Back Mountain for a senior portrait session, where she simply rocked the camera like a pro!

We began with a couple of setups around her home – she wanted all outdoor shots – including some great shots of her sitting in a rope swing under a maple tree.

There are moments like this where a photographer couldn’t ask for more – and a full Hollywood design team couldn’t create a better setup.  A maple tree aflame with fall color, the lawn behind thick with leaves, an overcast day with perfect, soft light – it doesn’t get any better than this!  (Although we did have to run and stop Kimmy’s dad from using the lawnmower to clean up the leaves until we’d finished our shoot!)

From there, we make a short drive down to The Lands at Hillside Farms and took advantage of the beautiful grounds there for a few more setups.  We stopped in the barn and grabbed the hay bale shot above, then worked our way along the creek and finally ended up inside the greenhouse for a few last, bright portraits.

There are folks who step in front of the camera and need a lot of coaching to feel – and look – comfortable for portraits.  And that’s fine, it’s part of the job and I’m always more than happy to help them get just the right pose, just the right expression.  It’s a fun challenge for both of us to overcome.  But then there are others like Kimmy, who step in front of the camera like the own it, and I spend the whole session yelling, “Don’t move, that’s perfect!”  They make my job easy.

Here’s to you, Kimmy – may your senior year be great!

Chelsea the harpist

In what will most likely be my final outdoor photo shoot before the snow flies this year, I’m thrilled to present Chelsea the harpist!

Even being musically-limited myself, I must know a half-dozen guitar players, at least a couple of drummers, and a few keyboarders.  But Chelsea was the first harpist I’ve ever met, and that was pretty cool – so I knew after our first portrait session together that I needed to work with her again!

Nick the cowboy

BRENT PENNINGTON Nick Pennington poses in cowboy garb with his .45 Henry rifle for a series of portraits taken at a gravel pit near Rutland, VT, on the evening of 18 June 2013.

A little over a year ago I did an outdoor session with my brother, Nick, while back in Vermont.  Nick is an outdoor kind of guy: a wildlife management major, avid archer, member of the local rod and gun club.  At the time we did a Daniel Boone-themed shoot , complete with coonskin cap, bow, and arrows.  The results were pretty darn cool and Nick loved them.  Which is saying a lot for a kid who has never liked having his photo taken.

Dirty Girl Mud Run 2013

BRENT PENNINGTON Mandy Boyle and Amanda Toth compete in the Dirty Girl Mud Run, held at the Toyota Pavilion on Montage Mountain on the morning of 05 May 2013.

I’m playing a bit of catch up now that my “Pride & Prejudice” project is wrapping up, so we’re going to jump back two weekends so I can share some photos from the Dirty Girl Mud Run, which was held at the Toyota Pavilion on Montage Mountain on May 4th & 5th.

Mandy and our friend Amanda completed the 5k obstacle course/race together for the second year as the “Dirty Nerdy Girls” team. So of course I was there to document it; one of the perks of dating a photographer is having them on-demand for this sort of thing.

Fun Family Portraits

BRENT PENNINGTON Sara & Tony Tompkins pose for portraits at Nay Ayg Park in Scranton on the afternoon of 02 March 2013.

As we start moving back into spring, it’s much easier to get out with the lights and start making some good portraits again. Also helps that the models aren’t freezing while we do it! So we’re back with a familiar face, Sara, who has been my go-to model when I have ideas and want to do a shoot. She’s fun, easy to work with, and has great personality in front of the camera.

Jack & Maureen – celebrating 45 years

When Robyn’s parents asked her to take a photo of them for their 45th wedding anniversary, she decided to do one better and get them a session with a professional. She and Mandy work for the same company, so we’ve met a few times at parties and the like. When she asked if I was available for a portrait session, I was thrilled to say yes.

The ladies behind NEPA BlogCon

The "Fearsome Foursome," creators of NEPA BlogCon, gather for a portrait session at Nay Aug Park in Scranton, PA, on the evening of 21 June 2012. Present are Karla Porter, Leslie Stewart, Mandy Boyle, and Michelle Davies.

Alright, playing catch-up here, but that’s okay because these images are too cool not to share, and the point behind them is still relevant.

These ladies are the creative genius behind NEPA BlogCon, which may be the biggest blogging event to hit Northeast Pennsylvania in…well, ever.  BlogCon will take place on Saturday, September 29th, 2012 at Luzerne County Community College in Nanticoke.  Check out their website for all the details, but suffice to say it’s going to be huge.  And awesome.  Just like they are.

Sara in the summertime

Had a great time working with Sara again a little while back.  She’s a wonderful model who is always cheerful and willing to try out just about anything.  We met up at McDade Park just before sunset and shot through to twilight, a whole mix of different looks: natural light and flash, in the sun and in the shade.  And as always, it rocked!

Kelly’s Headshots

Had the chance to work with Kelly over the past month, getting him some headshots for his acting career. Kelly is in middle school, and yeah, he has an acting career. Right now, he’s playing Mark in Rent. I am not the theater type and even I know that’s a big deal. Really cool stuff.

We shot a couple of different looks, trying some studio sets first and deciding they weren’t right for him, so we ventured outside and did a re-shoot at a local church. Surprising choice of locations? Not really – the church had all sorts of great, shaded areas, filled with different colors and textures, and we were able to make several different setups all within a few steps of each other.
